Underwater Restaurant

February 7, 2008

The first underwater Restaurant or not. Last year I came across an article about an underwater restaurant. Back then I was very interested in the article and wanted to blog about it, but as you know things get in the way and it all got forgotten. Until today.

It stumbled across my screen again this time in another article claiming it to be the worlds first underwater restaurant. So after a little research I am now going to let you know all about it.

Firstly lets get one thing straight. A lot of articles out there say that The Conrad Ithaa undersea restaurant was the first underwater restaurant. (November 2004)

Well, after my research I can say that the first underwater restaurant was in Egypt called The Red sea Star

It was finished in April 1999 and is on three levels. The underwater restaurant which is 5 meters below sea level seat 105 guests each at there own windows, beside and above. red-sea-star-underwater-restaurant.jpgThe restaurant serves fresh seafood and meat dishes, while merging with the amazing underwater sea world in its natural surrounding.

A large selection of drinks and beverages are offered in the romantic peaceful atmosphere at the unique underwater bar. bar.jpg Ten meters above sea level is the Metro Bar, a dance bar on a beautiful wooden deck, overlooking the magical view of the Gulf of Aqaba and the Edom mountains.
construction.jpg One of the best things about this underwater restaurant is that when it was built it was constructed in a ‘green’ environment with the preservation of the coral reef surrounding it.

It is built in the shape of a star hence the name and also offer night time viewing of the reef. The decor is very aquatic in design from sea urchin cushions to star fish chairs.

As for the latest underwater restaurant which is correct at the time that I wrote this can be found in the Maldives. underwater-restaurant-4 This undersea restaurant at the Hilton Maldives Resort & Spa. Ithaa (which is pronounced “eet-ha” and means “pearl” in the language of the Maldives, Dhivehi) The Ithaa restaurant in five meters below the waves of the Indian Ocean and surrounded by vibrant coral reef. The undersea restaurant is all clear acrylic apart from the floor, so the diners view through the clear acrylic, a complete 270 degree panoramic underwater view.

underwater-restaurant-5 Access to the underwater restaurant is by a wooden walkway from the nearby over-water Sunset Grill Restaurant. Only 12 people at one time for exclusive dining with a real difference can sample the contemporary fusion Maldivian cuisine with western and Asian influences.

I hope that you are now inspired to visit these unique underwater restaurants, and dine in very different surroundings. I certainly am.
