Snails, Escargot, Snails
February 10, 2008
Call them snails or escargot, it’s up to you, but it is a new one for Yeppoon.
I was treated to some delicious snails for dinner last night. Yes snails, not your rubbery tough dry snails that if you have eaten before may have been the case. These were absolutely fantastic, tender, melt in the mouth juicy morsels.
Michael’s on Matthew Flinders Drive in Yeppoon has snails on offer as an entree on the menu. Well worth a try if you have not had the chance before or you are a dedicated snail eater and want your fix.
At $15.50 with Parmesan crisps, roast garlic and a green herb sauce you will be getting great value.
Now don’t go and gather all your snails to cook tonight because you need to know what your doing. It should be noted that wild-caught snails that are undercooked can harbor a parasite that may cause a rare kind of meningitis.
Preparation of these little creatures is very important, as you don’t want to be chewing on a gritty dirty old muscle. Firstly you need to purge them. That is to let them eat healthy and starve for about one week, and by doing this they clean them selves. The common garden brown snail (Helix aspersa) has been introduced to Australia about 120 years ago and is cultivated for consumption by breeders here in Australia.
So get out there now and enjoy the delicious snails on offer at Michael’s, while they are available. Great to see products like this on a menu in Yeppoon, we are certainly moving forward slowly but surely just like the snail…………

Val and I cannot wait (but obviously must since we are in Karumba) and intend to be at Michael’s again during the next fortnight. We travel to Airley Beach next and then to Yeppoon.
Last year it was pidgeon, quail and such like. We wonder if snails are on the menu this time as well?
Michael’s is our favourite restaurant in the country and that is interesting for a pair of “gourmets” from Buderim.
Hi John & Val, thank you for the comment. I’m pleased that you found Michael’s a very fine restaurant and that you enjoy Michael’s food. Unfortunately the restaurant has now closed!!
Michael is now working at Coco’s @ seaspray. You can read more about this on the other topic from Michael’s http://www.johnmundell.com/dinner-at-michaels-on-matthew-flinders
I hope you get to enjoy your time in Yeppoon where ever you end up.
